The fear of the Lord is not a terror that drives us away, but a holy reverence that draws us nearer and reshapes the way we live. Because Jesus has opened the way to the Father, we can approach God with confidence while never losing our wonder at His holiness, majesty and authority.
- Reverence, not terror
- Friendship with the holy God
- Love that obeys
- Refusing peace with sin
- Drawing near with a surrendered heart
This five-day devotional accompanies Sunday’s message. You can watch the sermon on YouTube and then take one theme into each day of the week.
For a longer exploration of this week’s message, read the Sunday to Monday reflection.
Day 1 — Reverence, Not Terror
Reflection
At Sinai, the people trembled and stepped back, but Moses explained that God’s presence was not meant to drive them into hopeless terror. The fear of the Lord is a settled awareness that He is holy, majestic and worthy of our whole-hearted response.
Grace gives us confidence to approach God; reverence keeps that confidence from becoming casual. Today, let wonder replace both panic and over-familiarity. The One who welcomes you as Father is still the King of kings.
Scripture
“Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.’”
Exodus 20:20 (ESV)
Pause and reflect
Has your confidence before God become casualness? What would it look like to approach Him today with both trust and awe?
Prayer
Holy Father, free me from terror and teach me true reverence. Let the wonder of who You are shape the way I worship and live. Amen.
Practical step
Begin your prayer time by naming three truths about God’s holiness, majesty and grace before bringing your requests.
Day 2 — Friendship with the Holy God
Reflection
Psalm 25 connects the fear of the Lord with His friendship. God does not invite us into cold distance, but into close, trusting fellowship in which His heart and His ways increasingly matter to us.
Healthy friendship listens. We cannot ask God to bless our plans while continually ignoring His purposes, correction and commands. Intimacy grows as we honour Him, receive His Word and allow His priorities to become ours.
Scripture
“The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.”
Psalm 25:14 (ESV)
Pause and reflect
Are you mainly asking God to listen to you, or are you making room to listen to Him? What matter close to God’s heart needs your attention?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for inviting me into friendship with You. Teach me to listen, trust and value what matters to Your heart. Amen.
Practical step
Read Psalm 25 slowly. Write down one invitation, one correction and one promise you notice.
Day 3 — Love That Obeys
Reflection
Jesus calls His disciples friends, yet He never separates friendship from obedience. Grace comes first: He chooses us and loves us. Our obedience is not payment for His affection; it is the grateful response of people who are already loved.
We can know Christian songs, language and routines without growing closer to Christ. True intimacy listens when Jesus challenges us, especially when His words confront our preferences. Love says, “Your wisdom carries more weight than mine.”
Scripture
“You are my friends if you do what I command you.”
John 15:14 (ESV)
Pause and reflect
Is there a clear command of Jesus you have postponed? What is one obedient response you can make today?
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for loving and choosing me. Give me a willing heart that hears Your voice and responds with joyful obedience. Amen.
Practical step
Choose one teaching of Jesus you already understand and put it into practice before the day ends.
Day 4 — Refusing Peace with Sin
Reflection
The fear of the Lord changes what we do when nobody else is watching. It moves us beyond regretting exposure or consequences and teaches us to see sin as contrary to the character of the God we love.
Christians still stumble and need grace, but grace never asks us to camp comfortably in compromise. The Holy Spirit lovingly uncovers what harms our fellowship with God so that we can confess it, leave it and walk in freedom.
Scripture
“The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.”
Proverbs 8:13 (ESV)
Pause and reflect
Have you made peace with an attitude, habit or compromise that God is asking you to leave? What honest confession is needed?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, search my heart. Give me courage to confess what is wrong, receive Christ’s mercy and choose what honours You. Amen.
Practical step
Name one compromise before God and take one concrete step that removes its access or influence today.
Day 5 — Draw Near with a Surrendered Heart
Reflection
James gives us a wonderful promise: draw near to God and He will draw near to you. This is not an invitation to manufacture a feeling, but to come honestly—with humility, repentance and a heart ready to surrender divided loyalties.
Through Jesus, the way into God’s holy presence is open. We need not remain at a distance. We can come confidently because of His blood, and reverently because the Father we approach is perfectly holy.
Scripture
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
James 4:8 (ESV)
Pause and reflect
What is keeping you at a distance from God? What would wholehearted surrender look like today?
Prayer
Father, I draw near through Jesus. Purify my heart, renew my wonder and help me live in loving reverence and obedience. Amen.
Practical step
Set aside fifteen unhurried minutes to confess, surrender and quietly welcome the Holy Spirit’s transforming work.
Final thoughts
The fear of the Lord leads us from casual faith into wonder, obedience and deeper friendship with God. Respond to Jesus today, and let the Holy Spirit continue His transforming work in you.
