ACTS: Conflict comes in all shapes and sizes…

Today, Dan delved into the conflicts faced by the early church as recorded in Acts chapters 15 to 19. We touched on 3 types of conflicts: theological, relational, and worldly, focussing on theological conflicts that often arise from differing interpretations of scripture, as seen in Acts 15 where some believers insisted on circumcision for salvation. Paul and Barnabas opposed this, emphasizing that salvation is through faith in Christ alone. They returned to Jerusalem to resolve this issue, demonstrating the importance of accountability and collective discernment in theological matters.

The early church's approach to conflict resolution offers valuable lessons for us today. They engaged in open, respectful discussions, allowing all voices to be heard before reaching a consensus. They tested their beliefs against scripture, sought confirmation from others, and looked for spiritual signs. This structured approach ensured that their decisions were aligned with God's will.

We are called to live in harmony, be humble, and maintain unity within the church. While we may have differing opinions on secondary issues, we must stand together on the core truths of the gospel. Our witness to the world depends on our ability to love one another and handle conflicts with kindness and gentleness. By following the example of the early church, we can navigate conflicts in a way that honours God and strengthens our community.

1. **The Importance of Theological Conflict Resolution**:
The sermon emphasizes the significance of addressing theological conflicts within the church, as seen in Acts 15:1-20. The early church faced debates about the necessity of circumcision for salvation, and Paul and Barnabas took these issues back to Jerusalem for resolution. This highlights the need for accountability and structured discussion within the church to maintain doctrinal purity and unity.

2. **Living in Harmony Despite Differences**:
The pastor stresses the importance of living in harmony with one another, even when there are differences in theological beliefs. He points out that while primary issues like the gospel and salvation are non-negotiable, secondary issues should not cause division. Christians are called to be gentle, patient, and kind, ensuring that their discussions and debates are flavoured with love and respect.

3. **The Role of Love in Christian Unity**:
The sermon concludes with a powerful reminder that love is the defining mark of Jesus' disciples. By loving one another, Christians can maintain unity and effectively witness to the world. The pastor encourages the congregation to approach conflicts with a heart like Jesus, filled with kindness, gentleness, and a desire to honour God in all interactions.
